The work of the Inuit filmmaker, artist and hunter Zacharias Kunuk is, in many ways, completely unique. The importance of his work is explained not only by its thematic singularity, but also by his innovative way of thinking about the relationship between contemporary film production and the encounter between different cultures.
Kunuk is a pioneer in making films that are entirely spoken in the Inuktitut language, through which he explains the traditions of this culture, and speculates on its rites and mythology in the present day. Through his suspense and action films, both fiction and documentary, he has become a fundamental director for understanding the vitality and cultural resilience of the Arctic peoples, having authored several milestones of indigenous cinema.
Batalha will present his main works, awarded at important film festivals and international art spaces — from the Palme d’Or in Cannes to representing Canada at the Venice Biennale. The screenings aim to explain his technique, visual style, ethics, as well as the enchanting nature of his stories, which lead us to intimate encounters with the (real and fictional) lives of his culture and community.
