On the 50th anniversary of independence of the African countries formerly occupied by Portugal, Batalha Centro de Cinema presents an exhibition curated by Kitty Furtado, a researcher, activist and cultural critic whose work revolves around memory, racism and colonial reparations.

Bringing together archive material and works developed by the occupied countries during the liberation process, Independence Cinema highlights the role of moving image as a tool of resistance and documentation, and also propaganda. Centred on the independence movements in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe, this exhibition explores the range of cinematic languages during this period of intense political and cultural transformation.
