Mário Macedo graduated in Sound and Image from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa do Porto in 2010 and, the following year, completed the film course at the European Film College, in Denmark. He is a director and founder of the international film collective 73collective, a community of young directors focussing on highly personal projects.

At Batalha, we present a selection of his short films: works often inhabited by marginalised people, which reflect his passion for generational narratives, trenchant critique of capitalist society, and the hopes and fears that suffocate his protagonists.

Having lived in various European cities, Macedo’s films explore shifting perspectives, always fluid and profoundly connected to human relations, as he tries to capture the poetry of existence and its latent irony, along with all its superstitions.

His films have been selected for festivals including Cannes, Cairo, Doclisboa, Sarajevo, the Mostra International Film Festival in São Paulo and Clermont-Ferrand. Among his awards, highlights include the Grand Prize and European Film Academy Award at Curtas Vila do Conde 2024, the Best Director Award at Curtas Vila do Conde 2021 and the National Grand Prize at FEST New Directors/New Films 2017.

As well as cinema, Macedo has directed many music videos for artists such as Tyroliro, Mona Linda and Mary May. In 2024, he published his first photo book, Running Away Into You, in collaboration with Lebop, Editions Loco and Olhar de Ulisses.
