Beginning from a desire to rekindle a historical connection that began in the 1940s, Batalha has invited Cineclube do Porto to revive the format of the matinees that took place here for several decades, through an interpretative programme of the history and role of the Cineclube for the city and the country, from its foundation to the present day. Every second Sunday, we host screenings dedicated to key moments in the life and practice of Portugal's oldest active film club.
When, in 1961, the Cineclube organised the cycle A Film — A Writer, it presented works such as Luchino Viisconti's Le notti bianche and Roberto Rosselini's La paura. In May, this programme will be revived, questioning the relationship between the directors chosen at the time, the works and their context. In addition to showing Rosselini's film again, the Cineclube presents a film that was left out of the programme at the time: Huis Clos, by Jacqueline Audry.
In June, we celebrate the New German Cinema Week with Volker Schlöndorff's Young Törless, shown in 1971, which reflects on passivity in the face of evil and the rise of Nazism. The Cat Has Nine Lives, by Ula Stöckl, a feminist landmark of the new German cinema, will be also added to the programme.
