Based on the desire to resume a historical connection that began in the 1940s, Batalha invited Cineclube do Porto to recover the format of the matinees that took place here for several decades, through an interpretative programme of the history and role of the Cineclube for the city and the country, from its foundation to the present day. Every second Sunday, we screen sessions dedicated to key moments in the life and practice of Portugal's oldest active film club. These screenings are presented by members of the film club, who explain the role of each film chosen in the history of the institution.
Between December and January, the Cineclube is reviving the New Directors cycle, which premiered in October 1962. This programme presented works bearing the stamp of the French Nouvelle Vague, which was coming out against "the anchoring of already expired forms" and Italian Neorealism, in favour of "raising awareness of a new historical and social problem". Returning to this cycle today forces us to reflect on what the passage of time has added to this novelty. The selection of films presented will therefore be the starting point for this discussion — with works whose presence or absence from the historical record allows for reflection on how these changes were consolidated.
