Between photography, video and installation, Mariana Vilanova's artistic practice has focused on some of the most pressing challenges of our time, such as the impact of technological advances on human beings and the planet. At Batalha's invitation, the artist presents Na Faina do Argaço, an exhibition that seeks connections between ancient rituals - such as the harvesting of sargassum, valuable for its therapeutic and fertilising properties — and new technological developments, showing us that reading the past is essential to our evolution.
Based on the customs of a sargassum community and the problematisation of popular and scientific knowledge surrounding these algae, the aim is to speculate on an illusory and technological future, inspired by sustainability and the circularity of ancestral practices.
