Born in New Zealand to a family of theatre artists, Jane Campion is one of today's most distinguished filmmakers. Although not very extensive, her filmography of just eight features has garnered critical acclaim over the decades.
Her films defy the conventions of the various cinematic genres to which she has dedicated herself, from period film to dramatic comedy, erotic thriller, biographical film and western. Despite this diversity, there is a very strong thematic unity in his work. Guided by a continuous fascination with the human psyche, it focuses on: heroines in search of liberation and personal fulfilment; female sexuality and eroticism, which are always transgressive; the romantic relationship and on the narrative device of travel as a transformative element for the characters; and, finally, on national identity and culture, particularly New Zealand and Australian.
From April to June at Batalha, we present a complete retrospective of Jane Campion’s eight feature films, almost all of her short films and the first season of the series Top of the Lake — a body of work that illustrates this filmmaker’s pioneering path and her ceaseless exploration of the human psyche; a remarkable, long-lasting and uncompromising journey.
