Alongside the 2024 open air cinema programme, we present the exhibition Uma Noite Americana. Between the two screening rooms, the foyers and the Sala-Filme, four artists from North America lead us through nocturnal wanderings, exploring particular cultural, landscape and psychic contexts.

The exhibition symbolically alludes to the film technique used by North American studios in the production of Westerns, which consisted of shooting scenes during the day and simulating night by controlling the light.

Through different temporalities and cinematic languages, Cauleen Smith (b. 1967), Doug Aitken (b. 1968), Maya Deren (1917–1961), Alexander Hammid (1907–2004) and Pat Rocco (1934–2008) explore images, colours, shadows and reflections of “darkness” — urban, earthly or not so much — in films that challenge the individual or collective consciousness and portray important cultural issues of their time.
