Moving between cinematography and visual arts, Ana Mariz (Barcelos, 1992) studied film at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, in Prague and in Barcelona. Vigília, her first film, which premiered at IndieLisboa in 2016, and the documentary Childhood, Boyhood, Youth (2018), by Rúben Gonçalves, deeply influenced her sensitivity for lighting and framing.
Over the years she has worked on a range of films shown at festivals worldwide, such as Fauna (2017) and A Rainha (2017), by Lúcia Pires, Timkat (2021), by Ico Costa, and Prospect Park (2022), by Francisco Valente, for which she was director of photography. She took this role again on Silvestre (2021), by Rúben Gonçalves, and Nobody (2023), by Marcela Jacobina. The short film Matilde Olha Para Trás (2021) is Ana Mariz’s second film as director. The multidisciplinary approach that characterises her work has led her to collaborations with the classical music composers Jaime Reis and Nuno da Rocha, the artists Joana Patrão and Pedro Huet, the theatre companies SillySeason and Primeiros Sintomas and the brands Marques’Almeida and Gräffenberg. In parallel with her artistic practice, Ana Mariz writes and teaches.
