Human extinction, memory, technology and ecological disaster are some of the key themes addressed in the work of Agnieszka Polska, a Polish visual artist to whom Batalha will dedicate its first artist focus.

This programme presents films directed between 2016 and 2021, which explore how we reconfigure memories and historical events to imagine possible futures. Associating different visual and sound aesthetics, using software-animated images and a strong musical component, her work evokes, in both a serious and a joyful manner, urgent ethical issues of our time. Using personification to create fantastic and prescient protagonists (e.g. an anthropomorphic sun), the artist questions us about the responsibility for our human, individual and collective actions.

Within her work, technology, nature, spirituality and language form part of the same mesmerising, electric current. And with it we feel particularly calm and happy as we wait for the apocalypse.
