With roots in the disco and early electronic music movements, dance music emerged, gleaming, in the final decades of the 20th century. In the 1980s, we witnessed the rise of house and techno from Chicago and Detroit, respectively. The 1990s then saw the explosion of rave in Europe and the United States. In parallel, and throughout the world, the way in which we danced together was being revolutionised.
As dance music moved from an experience exclusive to Black, Latino and LGBTQI+ communities into becoming part of the dominant culture, cinema continued to record its subcultures. Bringing the sonic and visual potentialities of the dancefloor to the big screen was an attempt at registering the intangible; filmmakers and visual artists sought to portray the freedom, self-expression and feeling of belonging that clubs could offer.
After Hours: Clubbing on Film takes a retrospective look at the evolution of dance music, using cinema to explore the way in which nightlife culture can transform personal moments into collective movements of vindication and emancipation.
Curated by Ana David, Maria Ferreira and Tabitha Thorlu-Bangura.
House Was Born, Jake Sumner, 2017

Maria Ferreira
Maria Ferreira was born and lives in Porto, where she has been working in the club booths for over a decade. With an international career, she is neither one of the first nor the last generation of female and feminist DJs created in Porto, but she is part of the first generation of women to gain space and a voice in the city’s club scene. As programmer and coordinator of the versatile Passos Manuel, she favours local culture and artistic communities where she herself was involved from an early age, as well as the freshest and most avant-garde international music circuit.
Tabitha Thorlu-Bangura
Tabitha Thorlu-Bangura is a cultural programmer from London. She’s the founder of interdisciplinary project Sabi Arts, and Global Programming Director of NTS, an internationally celebrated music platform. Shaped by her West African heritage and London mindset, she is a key figure in the city's music scene. She's collaborated curatorially with institutions like the ICA, Tate Modern, Somerset House, and Serpentine Galleries throughout a decade of work in the arts. As a music supervisor, she's worked across contemporary dance and film, for artists Martine Syms, Onyeka Igwe, and Malik Nashad Sharpe.
