Hsiao Kang walks the streets of Taipei selling watches. Just days after the death of his father, he meets Shiang-Chyi, a young woman about to leave for Paris. He feels an immediate connection with her and even sells her his own watch. From then on, he changes every watch he encounters in Taipei to Paris time. This film once again speaks to the pursuit of love in adverse conditions — a recurring theme in Tsai Ming-Liang’s filmography. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, What Time is it There? also stands as an autobiographical reflection by the director, examining his own relationship to loss and cinema.
