A fundamental work of Spanish cinema, Welcome, Mr. Marshall!, which won an award at Cannes, is a satirical comedy exploring the impact of the Marshall Plan in Spain after the war, during the Franco regime. The film follows the poor village of Villar del Río as it prepares to receive a North American delegation that promises investment and prosperity. In an attempt to impress the Americans, the village inhabitants transform Villar del Río into a folklore caricature of Spain, with bullfighting, flamenco and traditional decorations — even though none of these things are part of the local culture.
