A striking work in Portuguese cinema, Veredas takes inspiration from a series of legends, myths and folk songs to explore the cultural roots of our country. Through an unconventional plot, the film narrates an allegorical journey to the heart of Portugal, evoking a spiritual and existential quest. The story follows two pilgrims who meet and descend, down unfamiliar paths, from Trás-os-Montes to the sea. Along the way, they come across symbolic figures and various obstacles that confront them with the mysteries of life, love and death. The film combines subtle humour and a critical look at society — both characteristics of João César Monteiro’s films.
