An award-winner at the Berlin Film Festival, The River is a melancholic portrait of the isolation and secrecy that can exist at the heart of a family, even when its members live under the same roof. An unfixable water leak and the mysterious neck pain suffered by the son of the family, Hsiao Kang, unsettle the household. Meanwhile, the mother is having an affair and the father has anonymous sex in the city’s gay saunas. Hsiao Kang has no job or goals in life — and when he finally manages to establish a relationship with his father, the results are devastating.
