In a kind of existential (and formal) puzzle, this film reflects on the failure of the Left in post-1968 Japan. Ōshima, here in a more experimental and electrifying style, tells the story of Endo, a young filmmaker and activist who jumps to his death while being chased by the police, and his friend, who is obsessed with discovering the circumstances of this suicide from the seemingly random images Endo left on his camera. As the search for the truth progresses, the boundary between his identity and that of the man who died blurs — leading him to question the role of political activism in a rapidly changing and deteriorating society.
