A woman adored by the masses struggles to find happiness and personal fulfilment. Broadly inspired by the life of Marilyn Monroe, The Goddess follows a young woman set for fame, but who suffers from insecurity, loneliness and other challenges arising from her media presence. The film is a powerful reflection on the roles and pressures imposed on women in society and, in particular, in the world of entertainment. Nominated for the Oscar for Best Screenplay in 1959, it appeared on the USA National Board of Review’s list of the 10 best films of that year.
