A masterwork by the Czech director who became known for combining live action with animation, The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, based on the stories of Rudolf Erich Raspe, concerns the legendary baron whose fantastic journeys take him from the Moon to 18th century Turkey. Seen as a precursor to the special effects that would arrive with computer generated images, the work of Karel Zeman mixes live action filmed in black and white with stop motion, collage, puppets and painted backdrops, taking us on an unexpected kaleidoscopic journey. The film won the Grand Prize at Cannes.
