To mark the centenary of Sergei Parajanov's birth, Batalha is screening the filmmaker's most acclaimed film. The Color of Pomegranates records the richness of Armenian culture through the story of Sayat-Nova, an 18th century troubadour, tracing his intellectual, artistic and spiritual development using iconographic compositions instead of traditional narrative. Its fusion of folklore and metaphor places this film far from the realism dominating Soviet film at the time, leading the authorities to restrict its distribution. It was instead shown in clandestine settings, often in a re-structured format.
