A family gathers to celebrate their patriarch's 60th birthday, but as time goes by, the reunion becomes increasingly dark and (at the same time) hilarious. "The Celebration", which may be the portrait of one of the most dysfunctional families in the history of cinema, also marks the first film of the infamous Dogme 95 movement, initiated by Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier. This movement, as radical as it was influential, translated into a cinematic manifesto with the aim of stripping cinema of the technical effects on which it was becoming dependent.
