Received as a blend of Lynch, Cronenberg, anime and sci-fi, Tetsuo: The Iron Man won Tsukamoto international acclaim and made him a cult figure. Shot in black and white, it follows a man with a fetish for metal (played by the director), who inserts pieces of metal into his body and, after a certain episode of mutilation, is run over by a car. Slowly he begins to transform into a human-metallic monster, in a kind of techno-industrial mayhem on acid punctuated by slashes of sexual sadism and violence. The film problematises the dangers of technology — a recurring theme in Cronenberg’s filmography.
