Jane Campion’s feature-length debut is an eccentric black comedy centred on the dysfunctional relationship between two sisters. Kate, conservative and superstitious, wants to lead a normal life with her boyfriend, but the return of Sweetie, her carefree and emotionally unstable sister, exposes the roots of the family’s problems. The film, which is seen as marking the end of the first phase of Campion’s career, premiered in competition at Cannes Festival.
