Melvin Van Peebles plays Sweet Sweetback, a Black orphan raised in a brothel and now a sex worker himself. Reacting to the violent acts of two racist police officers, he ends up killing both. Now the target of a full-blown manhunt, he enters a lawless world marked by violence and marginalisation. A precursor event to Blaxploitation, and considered a milestone in independent American cinema, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is a brutal story of survival told with jump-cuts, psychedelic montages, and an electrifying soundtrack. Despite being produced on a shoestring budget, the film became a big box office success.
