Solo de Violino is based on the true story of Adelaide Coelho da Cunha, daughter of the founder of Diário de Notícias, who falls in love with her chauffeur and abandons her family and Lisbon's social life. In 1918, Portugal is going through the aftermath of the First World War and the crisis of the First Republic, in a society marked by poverty and patriarchy. Adelaide's story culminates in her admission to the Conde de Ferreira Psychiatric Hospital in Porto, at the behest of her husband, with favourable opinions from Egas Moniz and Júlio de Matos. The case caused a huge scandal in intellectual circles and among the upper bourgeoisie of the time.
