When Kuanana returns home to find most of his family murdered, he begins a desperate search for his kidnapped wife and daughter. Loosely adapted from John Ford’s The Searchers and directed by Natar Ungalaa — who played the lead role in Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner — this film exchanges the heat of the desert for the icy aridity of Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost territory. The cold posed several difficulties for the production, damaging equipment and causing frostbite wounds on the actors. Searchers dispenses with the race relations theme of Ford’s film and instead focuses on a narrative of violence and redemption.
