Tsai Ming-Liang’s debut feature film dives into the nightlife of Taipei, following the pursuits and missed encounters between three young, lonely people. Out of the wanderings of Hsiao Kang (Lee Kang-Sheng), Ah Tze and Ah Kuei, the filmmaker weaves a beautiful portrait of youth alienation, here highlighted by conflicts with parents, fleeting and indifferent sexual encounters and petty crime. The film was shown in competition at the Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto and Tokyo film festivals.
