Mirroring Ken Loach’s characteristic political and social concerns, Raining Stones is a moving story about life on the edge of poverty at a time of widespread unemployment. The purchase of a Holy Communion dress for his daughter leads Bob (poor, but stubborn and proud) to resort to increasingly questionable measures to obtain the necessary money — while desperately trying to maintain his dignity. Meanwhile, his father-in-law predicts: “It rains stones seven days a week.” The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
