In 1900, on Valentine's Day, the students of a strict girls' boarding school in Australia set off for a picnic at Hanging Rock, an enigmatic volcanic formation in the state of Victoria. By evening, panic sets in: three students and a teacher have disappeared without a trace. Inspired, although loosely, by real events, this unsettling novel explores both the fate of those who were lost and the abyss they left behind. Often considered one of the best Australian films of all time, Picnic at Hanging Rock was one of the works that influenced Sofia Coppola in The Virgin Suicides.
