Sexuality and Violence in the Films of Nagisa Ōshima — Talk with Lúcia Nagib (Professor in Film, University of Reading)
Nagisa Ōshima’s work is marked by its daring, subversive approach to sexuality and violence, exploring taboo subjects with philosophical and political depth. Films like In the Realm of the Senses (1976) question social conventions and the control that institutions hold over our bodies and desires, deploying sexuality as a form of resistance and transgression, and violence as an extreme manifestation of conflicts both internal and social. In this talk, the Brazilian professor and researcher Lúcia Nagib — author of Nascido das Cinzas: Autor e Sujeito nos Filmes de Ōshima, still the only Portuguese-language book on the filmmaker — addresses the representation of sexuality and violence in Ōshima’s filmography.
