Truffaut’s debut feature film, Les quatre cents coups weaves a moving portrait of childhood and adolescence. At its centre is Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a boy of 14 who rebels against the authoritarianism of school and the scolding of his mother and godfather. Inspired by his own upbringing, Truffaut explores the transition into adulthood and the role of rebellion and freedom in the construction of individual identity. Les quatre cents coups was the first in a series of five films featuring the character Antoine Doinel, who reappeared in L’amour à vingt ans (1962), Baisers volés (1968), Domicile conjugal (1970) and L’amour en fuite (1979).
