An adaptation of the celebrated novel by Virginia Woolf, Orlando follows the young aristocrat (Tilda Swinton) on an ironic journey through 400 years of English history in search of love, first as a man and then as a woman. Speaking to contemporary preoccupations with gender and identity, the film is a provocative and original cinematic adaptation, staying notably loyal to the spirit of Woolf’s text. Orlando was recently restored to mark the 30th anniversary of its release, and it remains as compelling today as it was on the night of its premiere.
