Josephine Baker plays Zouzou, a laundry woman who becomes a star of the stage when she stands in for a temperamental diva during a show. However, her life takes a turn when her childhood friend, Jean, is accused of murder. Zouzou confronts a range of emotional dilemmas as she navigates between the world of the stage and her struggle to prove Jean’s innocence. Selected by Gisela Casimiro (artist and writer) to be shown in our Harlem Renaissance programme, this musical celebrates Josephine Baker’s contributions to French cinema and African American culture.
The screening on 4 April will be preceded by a conversation with Gisela Casimiro (artist, writer and activist) and David J. Amado (artist, director and activist).
