A pianist from an upper class family suffers an accident during a military training exercise and loses his vision. The event casts him into isolation, as he is abandoned by his wife-to-be and friends. This is when a young servant girl employed by his parents enters his life, taking them both on a new path. This is the only film that brought together Ingmar Bergman and Mai Zetterling — the director still at the beginning of his career, and the actor about to launch herself onto the international film scene.
