Belonging to a generation that admired the work of Nagisa Ōshima, Shinji Somai built much of his work around the themes of childhood and adolescence. Like Ōshima in Boy, Somai presents us with a transgressive reflection on the idea of the traditional Japanese family. In Moving, 10-year-old Renko, initially unconcerned by her parents' decision to separate, has to adapt to a new reality that will drive her personal growth. The film, which we present in a restored 4K print, is known for one of the most beautiful scenes depicting this stage of life, following Renko during a summer party full of fireworks and centred on rites of passage.
