Years after her family was forced to leave Uganda under the regime of Idi Amin, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) lives in Mississippi and works as a receptionist at a hotel. There, she falls in love with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), an African-American carpet cleaner. The romance challenges the prejudices of both families, trapped in histories of displacement, segregation and identity — while Mina carries the weight of exile, Demetrius faces the racism of the southern US.
