Years after her family was forced to leave Uganda under the regime of Idi Amin, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) lives in Mississippi and works as a receptionist at a hotel. There, she falls in love with Demetrius (Denzel Washington), an African-American carpet cleaner. The romance challenges the prejudices of both families, trapped in histories of displacement, segregation and identity — while Mina carries the weight of exile, Demetrius faces the racism of the southern US. In Mississippi Masala, Mira Nair, one of the most powerful voices in Indian cinema, creates a vibrant and sensitive portrait of love that transcends not only geographical borders, but also emotional and cultural barriers.
