Combining humour and social critique, Mandabi follows Ibrahima, a poor, unemployed man living in Dakar. His life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a money order sent by a nephew working in Paris, intended to support his family. His attempts to cash the cheque become progressively more complex thanks to bureaucracy, corruption and greed. As its protagonist faces ever greater difficulty in accessing what is rightly his, this jewel of Senegalese cinema explores themes of poverty, colonialism and the challenges of a shifting society. With dialogue principally in Wolof, Mandabi is believed to be the first full-length African language film from West Africa.
