Born in Xitole (Guinea-Bissau), Welket Bungué is an actor, director and multidisciplinary artist. In his impressive career as an actor he has worked with Patrícia Vidal Delgado, Ivo M. Ferreira, Burhan Qurbani and David Cronenberg, among others. He makes use of his training in Theatre (ESTC) and Performance (UniRio) when appearing in the many short films he has directed, drawing on a wide interpretative range. His involvement with the various dimensions of filmmaking extends to his work as a producer, screenwriter and set designer for his own works.
Bungué’s films, which have been shot in Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde, feature stories that fall somewhere between documentary fiction and fictionalised documentary. They focus on a sense of cultural and historical belonging, as well as the migrant experience, among people searching for their place between foreign networks. From the more than two dozen films Bungué has produced, Batalha presents a selection that reflects the Afrodiasporic and self-representational essence of his work.
Screening followed by talk with Welket Bungué, moderated by Guilherme Blanc. Programme notes by Lolo Arziki.
