Zetterling’s debut feature film, adapted from a literary series by the feminist writer Agnes von Krusenstjerna, follows three pregnant women from different social backgrounds who are waiting to give birth in a hospital in Stockholm. As they wait, they reflect on the past — childhood, adolescence, sexual experiences. Through a whirlwind of flashbacks, we get a glimpse into the lives — divergent yet interconnected — that have brought them to where they are now. A subversive film that deals with themes like sexuality, class and religion, its poster was banned at Cannes in 1965 — a year in which Zetterling was the only woman director with a film in competition.
