Awarded at Cannes, Les parapluies de Cherbourg is one of the greatest classics of European musical cinema. With a soundtrack by Michel Legrand, the film evokes the nostalgia of first love through the history of two teenagers: Emery (Catherine Deneuve, in the role that propelled her career), who helps her mother run an umbrella shop, and Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a car mechanic. Their romance is abruptly interrupted when Guy is called up to fight in the Algerian War. Despite promises, the passage of time and social pressures end up challenging their relationship.
