50 years after the death of Vittorio De Sica, we screen one of the filmmaker's most celebrated films. La ciociara introduces us to Cesira (Sophia Loren), a beautiful widow who flees Rome during the Second World War, seeking safety for her daughter in the village where she was born. Michele (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a young intellectual, falls in love with Cesira, who is too preoccupied with her daily struggles to reciprocate his timid advances. As the Allies advance, Cesira decides to return to Rome, finally coming face to face with the horrors of war.

Screening in partnership with ASCIP Dante Alighieri

On 14 November, at 7.15pm, at the Bar, we're hosting a reading session of Il giardino dei Finzi Contini, a novel by Giorgio Bassani adapted for the big screen by Vittorio De Sica.
