The first feature-length film by visual artist and filmmaker Sky Hopinka is an experimental and poetic look at the beliefs around death of the Chinook Native-American community in the north-eastern part of the USA. Using stories narrated in the indigenous language Chinuk Wawa, maɬni — towards the ocean, towards the shore follows the different routines of two of the director’s friends, Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier, as they reflect on life after death, reincarnation, the spiritual world and humanity’s place on the planet.
