Kubrick always had an uneasy relationship with his first feature film, going as far as to try and prevent it from being shown. He places us in the middle of a battle as a plane carrying four soldiers crashes behind enemy lines. From then on, it’s kill or be killed. After various cuts by the director, who was unhappy with the final product, the film returns in this restoration using the original 35mm material over a runtime of 70 minutes, the same duration as on its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It is a work that shows, albeit in allegorical form, some of the elements that Kubrick would revisit later on in his filmography.
