This programme starts out under the aegis of a phantom. The inaugural screening of Cineclube Matinées at the renovated Batalha presents Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, just as it was originally intended to be screened in the very first Cineclube do Porto session held in this auditorium on 11 November 1947. The film — one of the most influential experimental works of the 1920s — captured the pulse of modern life in the German capital, from dawn till dusk, in a quasi-documentary characterised by feverish editing. Its projection by Cineclube do Porto was forbidden by the state censors and replaced by Le jour se lève, by Marcel Carné, which will be presented in the second Cineclube Matinées screening.
