Despite taking place in the holidays, Brazil is a feverish hallucination and nightmare styled as a science-fiction comedy taking place in a hyper-technocratic and compartmentalised world.
Jonathan Pryce plays a state worker who passes his days smothered by an unfulfilling job, where he’s just one more piece in an inefficient and oppressive clockwork machine. A run-in in his day-to-day life with the woman of his dreams takes a turn for the worst, launching him on a desperate run from the authorities and turning him into an unlikely political rebel.
With beautifully ornate practical effects made with animation and miniatures, Brazil has already earned its status as hallmark Terry Gilliam. With this film, the erstwhile Monty Python member reaches a zenith of black humour and biting satire, parodying happy endings and the symbols of Christmas.
Screening presented by Hugo van der Ding and Martim Sousa Tavares — with Portuguese Sign Language.
