It is summertime and Miguel is sent away, by way of punishment, to an inn by the seaside — a visibly dilapidated place that seems to be stuck in the past. Besides his mathematics books, cassette radio and coloured pencils, he brings with him the typical curiosity of an adolescent. Bit by bit, he begins to take part in the zig-zag games of deception and desire. Produced on a low budget and with a minimal team, Joaquim Pinto’s first feature-length film showcases how Portuguese cinema was driven by youth and open to the rites of passage, a consequence of the new generation of filmmakers that was emerging at the time.
