To mark the centenary of Portuguese animation and its oldest film, O Pesadelo de António Maria, Batalha hosts a special screening organised by Casa da Animação.
Premiering on 25 January 1923 at Éden-Teatro in Lisbon, this film by the caricaturist Joaquim Guerreiro was a satire of António Maria da Silva, President of the Council of Ministers of the First Republic. The original copy had been lost so, in 2001, the producer and director Paulo Cambraia initiated a project to recover and remake the film from the original drawings, with music by the composer António Victorino d’Almeida.
Curated by Paulo Cambraia himself, this commemorative screening acts as a kind of anthology of Portuguese animated film, presenting the partial reconstitution of this short film alongside a selection of animated works produced in Portugal from the genre’s inception through to the 1960s.
