Lionel, a train driver and man of few words, has been responsible for raising his daughter, Josephine (Mati Diop, in her film debut), since the untimely death of his wife. The two are used to living alone, depending only on each other — until a neighbour reveals his long-harboured feelings for the beautiful Josephine. 35 rhums follows the evolving relationship between father and daughter, as each embarks on a new romantic relationship. A drama about care, the passing of time, bonding, attraction and disgust, it is also perhaps the most serene of Denis’s films.
