In a call centre in India, employees are educated in American pop culture, taught different accents and personal tics, before finally being given new names. All of these steps are taken to help them sell insurance, kitchen utensils, or other everyday products. Communication platforms as constructors of parallel realities is a central theme in this film that explores a niche industrial sector in India, a fertile ground for theories of subalternity and class. Inequalities are made manifest when the call centre’s employees return home, at the end of the day, to homes that do not correspond to the American dream.
