A silent classic of horror cinema, Faust was screened by the Clube Português de Cinematografia at the Grupo Recreativo Os Modestos ballroom in March 1946. In this adaptation of the popular German legend, an archangel and the devil make a bet: the world will be handed over to the devil if he manages to corrupt the soul of an honest man. The last film Murnau produced in Germany — where, years before, he had directed Nosferatu (1922) — before leaving for Hollywood is a milestone of German Expressionism. Almost a century later, Faust continues to surprise with its aesthetic extravagance and powerful narrative.
