Moving away from the docudrama style that had previously marked his films, Ken Loach tells the story of Klaus Ditteman, the musician and political dissident forced to abandon his family as an exile from the German Democratic Republic. Seeking refuge in West Germany, he is offered a tempting recording deal by a label — but the artist rapidly finds out that capitalist society can be as oppressive as what he had already lived through. Disillusioned, he sets off on a journey to find his father, who was himself exiled 40 years earlier. Starring Gerulf Pannach, a famous German musician who also composed the soundtrack, Fatherland was a prize winner at Venice Film Festival.
